| In this article we give a biographical sketch of Jerome of Stridon by way of historical context, to then go on to describe the intellectual personality, both as a writer and a translator, of the first great translator in history. Following an excursus into the history of art, in order to establish and set forth, in its fundamental lines, his presence in Christian iconography as a testimony of his cultural measure, we analyse St. Jerome’s translation activity and, finally, his philosophy and criticism of translation, using passages of his letters that deal with these matters. |
