| In this article we come to some new reflections on the presence of Ferrante II of Naples in the poetry of Cariteo (Benet Garret, 1450-1514). First, we study the ideal image of the king conveyed by the poet in relation to humanist thought of the Quattrocento. Second, we analyze the interpretative and stylistic implications of the figure of the king in the framework of the Petrarchism of Cariteo’s songbook Endimione. In this sense, the motif of the beloved prince created by Garret as a functional theme in his Endimione and in his work as a whole is identified and studied. We also relate this theme to the political aspect of Cariteo’s work and its development, taking into account the historical context. Our work contributes to the critical literature on the author, which until now has only dealt with Ferrante II in Cariteo’s work in a general way together, i.e., with other kings of the Aragonese dynasty of Naples and only in relation to Cariteo’s encomiastic poetry. |
