Abstract: | Objetivo. | Objective. To perform a literature review of the distinct instruments designed to measure self-care, including conceptual features, psychometric properties and guidelines for applicability. Method. We performed a search of CINAHL and MEDLINE for articles published between 1994 and 2003. The search focused on two concepts: self-care and questionnaire. In each instrument, conceptual underpinning, characteristics of the subjects and study environment, reliability, validity and responsiveness were evaluated. Results and conclusions. Twenty-seven instruments were identified and analyzed. The results showed a marked theoretical-conceptual emphasis with a notable role played by the theories of Bandura, Orem and Lazarus and Folkman in the development in most of the instruments. Little clarity was found in their distinct domains and guidelines for applicability were practically non-existent. The psychometric properties were insufficient to recommend the use of any of the instruments analyzed. |
