| In their Franco biography Payne and Palacios do not address the issue of the nature of the dictatorship. When they refer to Franco´s political regime they call it a "personal dictatorship" or an"authoritarian regime". In this article an attempt is made to examine the reasons for such an approach. Reference is made to the debate on the nature of the Franco regime which raged in the last two decades of the past century. Admittedly these issues do not rank highly amongst the ideological and historiographic interests of the two biographers because they do not see any point in examining the fascist component of the Franco dictatorship. In their view the process of defascistization started within a few months of the regime being set up. However, after a phase of clear fascist leanings other phases followed in which numerous remnants of those fascist tendencies subsisted. |
