| The study of amphorae production in the coast of Malaga during the Punic and Roman Republican periods has hardly been discussed by historiography, but in recent years the ancient Malaca is beginning to get more attention. During the study of unpublished amphorae groups discovered in different sites of the bay of Málaga and Cerro del Mar (Torre del Mar, Malaga), we have identified elements that improve the typology and archaeometric knowledge of these productions, which do not seem to have suffered any modification after the Roman conquest. Moreover, we have registered such amphorae in other areas of the southern region of the Iberian Peninsula. Thanks to this, we have been able to make a first approach to the quantitative and qualitative importance of their export. We show that, in the analysed period, the dynamism of the production in the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula in general, and the coast of Malaga in particular, is higher than what is recorded in scientific literature. This confirms the importance of this area for the understanding of the economy in Hispania Ulterior/Baetica. |
