| The aim of this paper is to analyse the contacts between Greece and India between the end of the Archaic period and the beginning of the Classical period. Through the careful reading and study of the extant fragments of the works of Scylax and Hecateus, and the books written by Herodotus, we can appreciate how India had two versions in the Greek mentality: the geographic and ethnographic one, and the paradoxographic one. The absence of a continuous, direct and fluid contact between India and Greece was surely the main cause why this division was unaltered for centuries in the Graeco-Roman Culture. |
