| The archacological evidence defines a region to the south of the River Vinalopó which was settled by peoples that, from the Late Bronze Age, during the orientalizing period and possibly at the height of the Iberian period, had a common cultural and possibly tribal background that could be called Mastian. Two of the principal cities of the protohistory of the Southeast, Mastia and Herna, are located in this region. The configuration of other areas through an analysis of the material culture is less obvious. To the north of the Valencia Region there were some tribes with strong Celtic roots (Beribraces) and links with Sedetania, particularly in the regions of the Alto Maestrazgo. The coastal areas of Valencia and Castellón, despite belonging to two of the ethnic groups referred to by the sources (Edetanos and Ilercaones) are culturally similar. The mountain ranges of the interior were a greater cultural barrier to the coastal influences radiating from Guardamar, Ibiza and the mouth of the Ebro from the Early Iron Age onwards. |
