Una aproximación a cómo se construye la imagen de los inmigrantes en la prensa gratuita

Abstract

En este artículo exploraré las principales estrategias empleadas para crear significado en cinco textos multimodales sobre inmigración publicados en un periódico local en Alicante, la tercera ciudad en número de inmigrantes en España. Analizaré las principales características lingüísticas y visuales empleadas en estos textos y la influencia que estas elecciones tiene en la creación del significado. También observaré cómo el texto escrito de cada artículo contribuye junto con la imagen a la creación de una imagen determinada de los inmigrantes caracterizada por la pobreza y la exclusión. El marco teórico de este artículo será la Gramática Visual y la Gramática Sistémica Funcional de Michael Halliday por la importancia que conceden a la relación entre cualquier texto y el contexto en que se produce. Este análisis será útil para entender algunas de las visiones negativas que los lectores de estos textos tienen sobre la inmigración, pues el análisis pone de manifiesto que los textos analizados representan una imagen negativa del fenómeno migratorio.

In this article I will explore the main strategies used to make meaning in different multimodal texts related to immigration in five multimodal texts published in a local newspaper in Alicante, the city with the third highest number of immigrants in Spain. I will analyse the main linguistic and visual characteristics used in these texts, and the influence of these forms in the creation of meaning. I will also observe how the written text in each article supports the construction of a particular image of immigrants. The theoretical framework of this article will be Visual Grammar and Michael Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics due to the importance they give to the relationship between any text and the context it which it is produced. This analysis will be useful to understand some negative opinions that the readers of these texts have on immigration, since the analysis points out that the texts I have studied represent a negative view of immigration.
