Ante la «marcha al pueblo». El último gobierno de la Unión Liberal en Alicante, 1863-1866

Abstract

Un problema fundamental del liberalismo español fue su dificultad para integrar sus diversas corrientes. Hasta un periodo bastante tardío, en el último tercio del siglo XIX, esta situación condujo a levantamientos populares, promovidos por políticos burgueses y militares, que a menudo incluían un llamamiento para volver a fundar constitucionalmente el Estado nacional en España. Este artículo aborda el problema del atractivo popular de este liberalismo, parcialmente burgués y elitista, a partir de una investigación sobre la provincia de Alicante, en el sur del País Valenciano. En primer lugar, se estudian las medidas adoptadas por el último gobierno de la «Unión Liberal» para integrar a los progresistas en la vida política. En segundo lugar, el trabajo destaca el rechazo hacia esta política por parte de progresistas y republicanos, así como su convencimiento de que, no obstante, los criterios burgueses que mantenían, era preciso un levantamiento democrático si se quería salvar la libertad en España.

An outstanding issue of Spanish Liberalism was its difficulty to integrate its different factions. Until a rather later period, well into the last third of the 19th. Century, this situation led to popular uprisings, promoted by the Middle Class and military politicians, which often included a call for a new constitutional foundation of the Spanish National state. This article outlines the popular appeal of this partly Middle Class, elitist Liberalism on the basis of a case study of the southern Valencian province of Alicante. Initially are studied the measures enacted by the last Government of the «Unión Liberal» in order to integrate the Progressive Liberals in political life. Secondly, continues to point out the refusal by Progressives and Republicans to accept this policy, as well as their resolution, in spite of their Middle Class standpoints, that a democratic uprising against the Queen and the Government was necessary, if liberty in Spain was to be saved.
