Alicante en el cambio del siglo XIX al XX: secularización y modernidad

Abstract

La percepción de fisuras en el modelo de sociedad católica vigente a lo largo de todo el siglo XIX es mucho más visible en el cambio de siglo, momento en el que los conflictos sociales en los que subyace la cuestión religiosa y el avance secularizador se hacen mucho más patentes. Este ha sido el objeto de este artículo, donde intentamos constatar la percepción en torno a la secularización confrontando dos ámbitos aparentemente muy distintos: un mundo urbano, desde la opinión pública y los debates en torno a cual era el grado de influencia que debía tener la Iglesia en la sociedad, y un mundo alejado de esa realidad, en el que las costumbres y los hábitos configuran la vida cotidiana. En su elaboración se han utilizado varias fuentes, entre las que sobresalen la prensa, los testamentos y la encuesta realizada por el Ateneo de Madrid de 1902. De su análisis subyace una visión plural de la sociedad en la que no caben compartimentos estancos en torno a un mundo urbano dinámico y secularizado y un mundo rural atrasado y ultracatólico.

The perception of cracks in the model of catholic society in force along all the century XIX is a great deal more visible in the change of century, moment in which the social conflicts in which underlies the religious question and the advance of secularization are done a great deal of more clear. This it has been the object of this article, where we try to verify the perception around the secularization confronting two apparently very different environments: an urban world, from the public opinion and the debates around which was the degree of influence that should have the Church in the society, and a far away world of that reality, in which the customs and the habits configure the routine life. In their elaboration several sources have been utilized, among the ones that excel the press, the testaments and the survey carried out by the Ateneo of Madrid of 1902. Of their analysis underlies a plural vision of the society which do not fit watertight compartments around a dynamic urban world and secularizated and a world rural backward and ultracatholic.
