| The purpose of this paper is to try to prove that there is a certain parallel between the behaviour of complex systems (exactly as described by the Chaos Theory and Complexity Sciences) and the behaviour of semantic change in natural languages. We understand that a lot of the concepts used in modern mathematics may be used to explain particular aspects of semantic evolution (or at least semantic evolution in a cognitive sense), and that various theoretical postulates of the Chaos Theory and cognitive historical semantics coincide. In order to give an example of this hypothesis, we will present an analysis of the evolution of the Spanish verb acostarse, a verb which we believe illustrates perfectly the epistemological parallel that we propose. |
