| The trilingual lexicon kept in the so-called Codex Cumanicus and intended to have been written for the sake of predication among the Turkic people settled on the Black Sea has been transmitted as a part of an isolated manuscript dated towards the beginnings of the 14th century. Its structure and composition follows a pattern quite common from the former centuries onwards, but the linguistic choice deserves full attention because of its singularity, given that it seizes three distant languages, Latin, Persian and Cuman, the last one being a variant of the north western branch of the Turkic family, as a part of the Uralo-Altaic languages. Therefore, the lexicon attests situations of linguistic contact that gave room to borrowing and other phaenomena of mutual influence. Our aim would be to present and comment those etyma of Roman origin for which we suggest a Catalan source. Former work on the linguistic contact between Catalan and Greek and Catalan and Turk are no related to the present paper regarding our methodology in gathering the data; they are, however, insofar as both use the linguistic comparative method as well as the social perspective where linguistic phaenomena take place. |
