Impact of Online Emotions and Netiquette on Phubbing from a Gender Perspective: Educational Challenges

Abstract

During adolescence, the Internet is mainly used for purposes of socialization. Non-verbal elements limit online communication, thus leading to widespread use of emotional resources. It would be preferable if virtual interaction did not reduce the quality of person-to-person contacts, particularly thanks to the adoption of netiquette (respectful treatment of others online). Phubbing, the tendency to check one’s mobile phone during a face-to-face conversation, has become a widespread practice that causes anxiety and can lead to social exclusion. Educating on this behavior could be related with emotional content and with netiquette. This study’s objectives are to analyze the extent to which the use of netiquette and online emotional content are associated with and can predict phubbing, taking gender differences into account. 935 adolescents (ages 12-17, 55,1% female) from 13 schools in the region of Aragon (Spain) responded to our questionnaire. Results are revealing: the level of online emotional content increases the level of phubbing; online emotional expression is the most influential risk factor in both genders; netiquette protects girls to a greater degree. We discuss the educational challenges posed by guaranteeing the responsible use of social networks.

Durante la adolescencia, Internet se usa principalmente con fines de socialización. Los elementos no-verbales limitan la comunicación online, conduciendo así a un empleo generalizado de los recursos emocionales. Sería preferible que la interacción virtual no redujera la calidad de los contactos “persona-con-persona”, en particular gracias a la adopción de la netiqueta (el tratamiento respetuoso hacia los demás online). El phubbing, la tendencia a mirar el móvil durante una conversación cara a cara, se ha convertido en una práctica extendida que crea ansiedad y puede llevar a la exclusión social. Educar acerca de este comportamiento podría relacionarse con el contenido emocional y con la netiqueta. El presente estudio se marca como objetivo analizar la medida en que la utilización de la netiqueta y el contenido emocional online se asocian con el phubbing y pueden predecirlo, teniendo en cuenta las diferencias de género. 935 adolescentes (de edades comprendidas entre los 12 y los 17 años, con un 55,1% de chicas) de 13 colegios ubicados en la comunidad autónoma de Aragón (España) respondieron nuestro cuestionario. Los resultados son reveladores: el nivel de contenido emocional online aumenta el nivel de phubbing; la expresión emocional online constituye el factor de riesgo más determinante en ambos géneros; la netiqueta protege en mayor medida a las chicas. Abordamos los retos educacionales que plantea garantizar un uso responsable de las redes sociales.
