| Maḥmūd Sāmī al-Bārūdī is an essential piece of the Egyptian political scene during the khedivate and the British invasion. Before the military defeat, he remains exiled sixteen years on the island of Ceylon. Not only as a politician will he be part of the reformist movement of Arab culture and Islamic religion, by the hand of Muḥammad 'Abduh, but as a poet he will lead, practically alone, the formal and emotional transformations that begin modern Arab poetry. It will be on the mythical island of Sarandib where al-Bārūdī composes his cycle of al-Sarandibiyyāt and begins to transform the ancient world of 'ajā'ib literature by pre-Romanticism. |
