Al-Bārūdī en Ceilán (1883-1899): la reescritura de la poesía árabe

Abstract

Maḥmūd Sāmī al-Bārūdī es pieza esencial del escenario político egipcio durante el jedivato y la invasión británica. Ante la derrota militar, permanece exiliado dieciséis años en la isla de Ceilán. No sólo como político formará parte del movimiento reformista de la cultura árabe y la religión islámica, de la mano de Muḥammad 'Abduh, sino que como poeta liderará, prácticamente en solitario, las transformaciones formales y emocionales que dan inicio a la moderna poesía árabe. Será en la mítica isla de Sarandib donde al-Bārūdī componga su ciclo de Las ceilanesas y comience a transformar el mundo antiguo de la literatura de 'aŷā'ib por el prerromanticismo.

Maḥmūd Sāmī al-Bārūdī is an essential piece of the Egyptian political scene during the khedivate and the British invasion. Before the military defeat, he remains exiled sixteen years on the island of Ceylon. Not only as a politician will he be part of the reformist movement of Arab culture and Islamic religion, by the hand of Muḥammad 'Abduh, but as a poet he will lead, practically alone, the formal and emotional transformations that begin modern Arab poetry. It will be on the mythical island of Sarandib where al-Bārūdī composes his cycle of al-Sarandibiyyāt and begins to transform the ancient world of 'ajā'ib literature by pre-Romanticism.
