Abstract: 
Las elecciones municipales de abril de 1931, que habían arrojado en la provincia de Valencia un resultado muy igualado entre monárquicos y republicanos, fueron puestas en entredicho por el nuevo gobierno republicano. Por ello, en las semanas siguientes se procedió a “depurar” los ayuntamientos tanto de concejales que habían sido elegidos en virtud del artículo 29, como de aquellos que supuestamente se habían valido del fraude para conquistar su acta. Las elecciones de mayo para cubrir las numerosísimas vacantes dieron un vuelco increíble. Los republicanos habían pasado de controlar la mitad de las concejalías, a disponer del ochenta por ciento de las mismas. Ahora bien, ¿cómo fue posible una alteración tan repentina de los resultados? ¿es que la mayor parte de la población valenciana era realmente republicana? En las siguientes líneas se aborda la campaña de suspensión de ayuntamientos valencianos constituidos tras el 12 de abril, y se analiza si las denuncias de corrupción surgidas tras las elecciones de abril eran sólidas o si por el contrario confirman la tesis de que no eran más que una excusa para preparar el terreno de cara a los transcendentales comicios a Cortes constituyentes de junio.
The April 1931 local election that gave both monarchists and republicans quite similar quotes of power in the province of Valencia, were soon questioned by the new republican government. Thus, in the following weeks they started to ‘purge’ every local councillor that had been elected by way of Article 29 of the Electoral Law, and those considered to have obtained their election certificate through fraud. The repeat elections held in May that year to fill the large number of councillor vacancies overturned the control of the city councils. The republicans went from controlling half of the councillorships to a shocking eighty per cent of them. However, how could such an abrupt turn around possible? Was that surprising percentage of republican support real? This article addresses the campaign of dismissals in the city councils of the Valencia province carried out after April 12. It also tries to unveil whether the accusations of vote rigging that arose after the April elections were sound or just an excuse to prepare the ground for the coming ‘Cortes’ elections of June that would have far-reaching impact on the development of a new constitution.
