Empowering Critical Thinking: The Role of Digital Tools in Citizen Participation

Abstract: 
The widespread use of digital technologies and the expansion of social networks has created new communication and meeting spaces where people and social and political actors connect with each other. This opens diverse spaces and possibilities for digital engagement in a more accessible, immediate, continuous, egalitarian, and personalized way. Digital technology facilitates learning, dissemination, and access to information, turning it into a means of communication and fueling the practice of critical thinking. In particular civic critical thinking practices improve the organization and effectiveness of civic networks and spaces for citizen participation, ultimately helping to produce responsible, conscious citizens. This study proposes a series of hypotheses based on the relationships between digital learning, critical thinking and civic participation, and tests them using the technique of structural equation modeling (SEM) with partial least squares (PLS) applied to a sample of 191 primary and secondary school students. The results indicate that digital tools have a positive impact on the development of critical thinking, and this influences citizen participation, transforming people into more engaged citizens of the world with participatory attitudes and values.
El uso generalizado de las tecnologías digitales y la expansión de las redes sociales han creado nuevos espacios de comunicación y encuentro donde las personas y los actores sociales y políticos se conectan entre sí. Esto abre diversos espacios y posibilidades para el compromiso digital de una manera más accesible, inmediata, continua, igualitaria y personalizada. La tecnología digital facilita el aprendizaje, la difusión y el acceso a la información, la convierte en un medio de comunicación y alimenta la práctica del pensamiento crítico. Estas prácticas de pensamiento crítico cívico mejoran la organización y eficacia de las redes cívicas y los espacios de participación ciudadana. En definitiva, ayuda a formar ciudadanos responsables y conscientes. Se plantean una seria de hipótesis basadas en las relaciones entre el aprendizaje digital, el pensamiento crítico y la participación ciudadana. El estudio empleó la técnica de modelado de ecuaciones estructurales (SEM) con mínimos cuadrados parciales (PLS), donde se analizaron las respuestas de 191 estudiantes de primaria y secundaria. En esta investigación se muestra que el aprendizaje de herramientas digitales incide en el compromiso cívico, mediado por el pensamiento crítico, lo que repercute en las identidades personales y sociales, transformando a las personas en ciudadanos del mundo con actitudes y valores más comprometidos y participativos.
