Urban penalty y reforma sanitaria en una ciudad minero-metalúrgica: Linares (1860-1920)

Abstract: 
El artículo tiene un primer apartado donde se define y analiza el término urban penalty. La segunda parte ofrece información que demuestra que Linares sufrió “castigo urbano” tanto en sobremortalidad como en estatura. El tercer apartado está dedicado a la reforma sanitaria de la ciudad iniciada a principios de la década de 1890 y a sus efectos sobre la mortalidad. El cuarto documenta que la urban penalty de Linares fue menos grave que la de una ciudad “gemela” (La Unión), pero más grave y persistente que la de la zona minero – metalúrgica de la ría de Bilbao. El artículo termina con unas conclusiones donde sistematizamos las razones que explican la distinta gravedad y duración del “castigo urbano” en las tres zonas minerometalúrgicas.
This article begins with a first section where the term urban penalty is defined and analyzed. The second part contains information showing that Linares suffered urban penalty both in excess mortality and height. The third section is focused on the study of the sanitary reform of the city, initiated in the early 1890s, and on its effects on mortality. The fourth section documents that the Linares urban penalty was less serious than the one of a "twin" city (La Unión), but more serious and persistent than the one of the miningmetallurgical zone of the Bilbao estuary. The article ends with some conclusions where we systematize the reasons that explain the different severity and duration of the urban penalty in the three miningmetallurgical zones.
