Neutralización del original, borrado del femenino y pervivencia del masculino en la traducción: el caso de chairman

Abstract: 
La neutralización de los originales ingleses no garantiza la neutralización de la traducción española e incluso puede ser contraproducente, sobre todo si el elemento neutralizado era femenino. Ocurre con la sustitución de chairman y chairwoman por alternativas neutras (chair, chairperson), que invisibiliza la escasa representación femenina y fomenta la masculinización por defecto en la traducción. En un estudio de corpus paralelos institucionales se analizan las incidencias de chairman y sus variantes de género, y los efectos en la traducción española. Además de observar las consecuencias negativas de la neutralización de los originales en términos de visibilidad de las mujeres en ambas lenguas, se constata la repercusión en la lengua de llegada de las técnicas de lenguaje no sexista empleadas en el original.
The neutralisation of English originals does not guarantee the neutralisation of the Spanish translation and can even be counterproductive, especially if the replaced element was feminine. This happens with the replacement of chairman and chairwoman for neutral alternatives (chair, chairperson), which makes women, who are already scarcely represented, invisible and encourages the default masculinisation of the translated noun. In a study of parallel institutional corpora, the incidences of chairman and its gender variants are analysed, together with their effects on Spanish translation. Besides observing the negative consequences of the neutralisation of originals in terms of the visibility of women in both languages, the use of non-sexist language techniques used in the source text can have an impact on the target text.
