Orihuela y el bulo del asesinato de Felipe II

Abstract

Después de varios siglos marcados por repetidos fracasos, en 1563 Felipe II escuchó las reivindicaciones de Orihuela y pidió al papa Pío IV que aceptase crear un nuevo obispado cuya sede estuviese en la citada ciudad. No obstante, el día de Fin de Año llegó a ella una macabra noticia que hizo temblar a todos sus habitantes: el día de Navidad cuatro caballeros habían asesinado al rey en Monzón, mientras presidía las Cortes Generales de los reinos de la Corona de Aragón. La conmoción a todos los niveles fue tremenda. El presente artículo trata de ilustrar el impacto que causó tal rumor en la ciudad del Bajo Segura, y las repercusiones que tuvo para sus autoridades civiles.

In 1563, after several centuries marked by repeated failures, Phillip II listened to the requests from Orihuela. He also asked Pope Pius IV to accept the creation of a new bishopric based in the appointed city. Nevertheless, on New Year’s Eve all the citizens were frightened by a chaotic news: on Christmas Day while presiding at the General Parliament of the "Corona de Aragón" kingdoms the King was killed by four lords in Monzon. The shock was terrible in every aspect. The article tries to show the impact that caused such a rumour in the Low Segura city and the consequences for their civil authorities.
