L'habitatge social a Espanya. El cas d'Elx i l'arquitectura residencial d'Antonio Serrano Bru (anys 60 i 70)

Abstract

Els problemes de l᾽habitatge a Espanya en els anys 60 i 70, originats pel creixement poblacional de les ciutats i la insuficient capacitat d᾽absorció de l᾽habitatge existent, van conduir a la necessitat d᾽assumir, per part dels diferents municipis, intervencions significatives en matèria d᾽habitatge social. Aquest seria el cas d᾽Elx, ciutat que es veuria afectada per una falta considerable d᾽habitatges a causa de l᾽impuls de la indústria del calçat. Per a resoldre aquests problemes, l᾽administració encarregarà en la dècada dels 70 a l᾽arquitecte Antonio Serrano Bru la realització de destacades urbanitzacions com «Els Palmerars, «Pisos Grisos» o «Costablanca-Nord», destinades a la població treballadora. Aquests conjunts residencials ens remeten al corrent arquitectònic internacional del brutalisme per la dimensió i el tractament dels seus volums i constitueixen una significativa aportació a l᾽arquitectura moderna i contemporània del segle xx de la ciutat d᾽Elx.

The problems of housing in Spain in the 60s and 70s, caused by the population growth of the cities and the lack of sufficient housing stock, led to the need to assume, by the different municipalities, significant interventions in social housing. This was the case in Elx, a city that was affected by a considerable shortage of housing due to the demand created by the footwear industry. To solve these problems, the administration commissioned the architect Antonio Serrano Bru in the 1970s to carry out outstanding urban developments such as «Els Palmerars, «Pisos Grisos» or «Costablanca-Nord» for the working population. These residential complexes remind us of the international architectural trend of brutalism because of the dimensions and treatment of the volume and constitute a significant contribution to the modern and contemporary architecture of the 20th century in the city of Elx.
