Abstract: With regard to Spanish whose word-order is supposed to be «pragmatically controlled» (Givón, 1983), what has to be done is empirically based investigation in order to prove suppositions of that kind. The main proposal of the present study consists in the discussion of research relative to (pragmatic) conditions of word order in (colloquial) Spanish. One of the most important studies in this field, the Bentivoglio/Weber (1986) study, introduces the concept of «identifiability» in order to overcome the simple dicotomy of «old» vs. «new information». The empirical part of this article consists in an application of the Bentivoglio/Weber (1986) methodology to a corpus of spoken Castilian. It will be shown that the concept of identifiability has to be conceived of as an interactive procedure.
