| In order to obtain more information about past climates, new palaeoclimatic techniques and sources are needed to evaluate the present climatic change. This paper focusses on one of these techniques, historical climatology, and on the usefulness of ships’ logbooks as a proxy tool for climatic reconstructions. Many documents with climatic content were written during the golden period of Catalan sailing across the Atlantic Ocean (nineteenth century). Naval journals and articles supply valuable information on the structure of the log-book, its evolution over the years and the methodology used for the transcription of weather data. The detailed analysis of a single journey of a ship confirms the value of this kind of source as a tool in the synoptic analysis of past climates. |
