La revuelta siria: ¿hacia un cambio de régimen?

Abstract

El régimen sirio se tambalea. La revuelta iniciada el 15 de marzo pasado se ha extendido por todo el país: los manifestantes exigen más libertades y el fi n del Estado autoritario. Al inclinarse por la represión, el régimen sirio evidencia su incapacidad de reaccionar a la ola democratizadora que vive el mundo árabe, que ya ha provocado la caída de Ben Ali en Túnez y Mubarak en Egipto. En lugar de adoptar una agenda reformista, como exige la calle siria, el presidente Bashar al-Asad ha denunciado una conspiración internacional contra el último bastión del arabismo.

The Syrian regime is faltering. The revolt that began on 15 March has spreads throughout the country: the protesters are demanding freedoms and the end of the authoritarian state. Opting for repression, the Syrian regime demonstrates its inability to answer the wave of democratization that animates the Arab world, which has already caused the downfall of Ben Ali in Tunisia and Mubarak in Egypt. Instead of adopting an agenda of reforms, as required by the Syrian people, President Bashar al-Assad has denounced an international conspiracy against the last bastion of Arabism.
