La economía y la guerra

Abstract

En este trabajo se presentan unas estimaciones del tiempo que necesitaron España y los principales países europeos en recuperar los niveles productivos anteriores a la Guerra Civil y a la Segunda Guerra Mundial, respectivamente. Se parte de una nueva metodología que intenta sintetizar, en términos temporales, los años de retroceso que supuso el conflicto y los años que fueron necesarios para la recuperación en cada uno de los países estudiados. Los resultados muestran, de manera incontestable, la extraordinaria lentitud en la recuperación de la economía española, en relación a lo acontecido con las principales economías europeas, incluidas las más duramente dañadas por la guerra.

This paper presents estimates of the time needed by Spain and the main European countries to return to the production levels they had attained prior to the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War, respectively. By means of a new methodology, we have sought to determine the years of retrogression that war entailed, and the time that each of the countries studied took to recover. The results provide irrefutable proof of the exceptionally slow pace of the recovery of the Spanish economy compared with what happened in the major European economies, including those most severely affected by war.
