Violence and the Right to Education in the Northern Triangle of Central America

Abstract

Based on a human rights and development approach, this article aims to study the influence and impact of structural violence in the Northern Triangle of Central America on children's right to education. First, it analyses the context of poverty, inequality and generalised violence that plagues the sub-region under study. Secondly, a diagnosis is made of the situation regarding the right to education through indicators of educational completion and efficiency, including critical moments in the transition through the education system, as well as the phenomenon of school dropout. The article then analyses a series of determining factors in the violation of the right to education, insofar as they are linked to the situation of generalised structural violence. Finally, a series of conclusions are offered in order to guide debate and reflection on possible solutions to the problem studied.

Partiendo de un enfoque de derechos y de desarrollo humanos, el presente artículo tiene por objeto estudiar la influencia y el impacto de la violencia estructural imperante en el Triángulo Norte Centroamericano sobre el derecho a la educación de la infancia. Para ello, en primer lugar, se hace un análisis del contexto de pobreza, desigualdad y violencia generalizada que azota a la subregión objeto de estudio. En segundo lugar, se realiza un diagnóstico de la situación del derecho a la educación mediante indicadores de conclusión y eficiencia educativas que recoge momentos críticos de la transición por el sistema educativo, así como del fenómeno del abandono escolar. Seguidamente, se analizan una serie de factores determinantes en la conculcación del derecho a la educación en la medida en que se vinculan con la situación de violencia estructural generalizada. Finalmente, se ofrecen una serie de conclusiones con la finalidad de orientar el debate y la reflexión a propósito de posibles soluciones.
