Factores y rutinas profesionales que influyen en la visibilidad de las mujeres científicas en los medios digitales

Abstract

Los estudios sobre la imagen mediática de las mujeres científicas han puesto el foco en el contenido. Este artículo examina las rutinas de trabajo de los y las periodistas que escriben sobre ciencia, así como la perspectiva de la ciencia que prima en las redacciones. El objetivo es conocer qué factores repercuten y de qué manera en la elaboración del mensaje que los medios digitales transmiten sobre las científicas. Basado en una metodología cualitativa, este trabajo ofrece los resultados de nueve entrevistas semiestructuradas a responsables de páginas web y expertos y expertas del ámbito de la comunicación, la ciencia y el género, además de una entrevista de grupo con siete periodistas que abordan temas científicos. Los resultados indican que la rapidez que impera en las redacciones no contribuye a una búsqueda pausada de las fuentes, un proceso que se ve influenciado, asimismo, por la mediación de los gabinetes de prensa y por la preponderancia de las áreas STEM. El estudio identifica tres pautas para impulsar un tratamiento adecuado de las científicas: el conocimiento y la transmisión de la situación de las mujeres en la ciencia a través de contenidos específicos; la promoción de su visibilidad tanto cuantitativamente como en lo referente a su estatus; y el tratamiento basado en la normalidad. El objetivo de estas directrices es afrontar las dificultades que los y las periodistas refieren a la hora de hallar fuentes femeninas y contribuir a disminuir los estereotipos y mejorar la imagen profesional de las mujeres científicas.

Studies on the image of women scientists in the media have focused on content analysis. This article examines the work routines of science journalists, as well as the perspective of science that prevails in the newsrooms, because it is an effective approach for a better understanding of the mechanisms that contribute to the media treatment of these professionals. The objective of our research is to find out what factors affect in the elaboration of the message that the digital media transmits about women scientists, and how they affect this. Based on a qualitative methodology, the study was carried out through nine semi-structured interviews with website managers and experts in the field of communication, science, and gender. The methodological design also included a group interview with seven journalists who deal with scientific issues. The results indicate that the current working speed in newsrooms does not contribute to a slow and thoughtful search for sources of information, and that this process is also influenced by the mediation of the press offices and by the preponderance of STEM areas. The study also identifies three specific aspects to encourage an adequate treatment of women scientists: promoting their knowledge and transmitting the situation of women in science through specific contents; promoting their visibility both quantitatively and in terms of their status as scientists; and promoting a treatment based on normality. The aim of these guidelines is to overcome the difficulties journalists report when trying to find female sources, as well as contributing to reduce stereotypes and focus on the professional role of women scientists.
