Parentesco y biografía empresarial

Abstract

Analizando el uso de la biografía en el estudio de los empresarios como actores sociales y no sólo como agentes económicos, este artículo discute la utilidad de una herramienta usada en la biografía empresarial: las genealogías familiares sustentadas en las teorías del parentesco. Se aplicaron genealogías al elaborar las biografías de un grupo de empresarios con una importante y sostenida actividad de negocios durante un siglo, de 1920 a 2022, en la península de Yucatán, en el sureste de México. Se trata de una cohorte de tres generaciones de una familia de extensa de empresarios descendientes de migrantes de origen libanés. Se concluye que la organización del parentesco que ofrecen las genealogías revela la visión de conjunto de la interacción de varias familias y generaciones en un mismo campo empresarial y explica con mayor fuerza que la biografía individual el éxito y larga duración de las empresas de los migrantes de este origen y de sus descendientes.

Analysing the use of biography in the study of entrepreneurs as social actors and not only as economic agents, this article discusses the usefulness of a tool used in business biography: family genealogies based on kinship theories. Genealogies were applied to the biographies of a group of entrepreneurs with significant and sustained business activity over a century, from 1920 to 2022, in the Yucatán peninsula in southeastern Mexico. It is a three-generation cohort of an extended family of businessmen descended from migrants of Lebanese origin. It is concluded that the organisation of kinship offered by the genealogies reveals the overview of the interaction of several families and generations in the same business field and explains more strongly than individual biography the success and longevity of the businesses of migrants of this origin and their descendants.
