Volviendo a un viejo debate: el nivel de vida de la clase obrera británica durante la Revolución Industrial

Abstract

El trabajo ofrece un estado de la cuestión sobre esta antigua controversia. Se analiza primero el problema de la medición del bienestar para explicar luego las causas que han motivado la larga duración del debate. El artículo sintetiza los resultados de las investigaciones más recientes sobre elementos crematísticos y no crematísticos del nivel de vida de los trabajadores, así como las conclusiones que arrojan los estudios antropométricos.

This paper reviews the old debate about the standard of living of the British working class during the Industrial Revolution. It starts by analyzing the measurement problem and then explains the reasons for the old and long permanence of the controversy. The article summarizes the results of the latest contributions about the monetary and non-monetary elements of the workers’ standard of living as well as the conclusions aroused by anthropometry.
