Escribir e ilustrar desde el exilio: La revista Mujeres Españolas (México años 50) y sus colaboradoras

Abstract

Analizamos el contenido de la revista Mujeres Españolas como parte de la cultura y la memoria de la izquierda marxista española en el exilio. Se trata de una revista femenina, antifranquista, pacifista, una publicación propia de las exiliadas, que quería atraer al mayor número de refugiadas españolas que estuvieran en contra de la dictadura y a favor de la democracia en México. Al estar totalmente volcada hacia temas españoles y exaltar los valores de la patria que encarnaban los partidarios de la República durante la Guerra, puede considerarse nacionalista. Desde una perspectiva de género tiene un discurso maternalista, que exalta los valores tradicionales de la domesticidad. Con este enfoque destacamos la obra de tres de sus más estrechas colaboradoras: Luisa Carnés (directora de la revista), la escritora Felisa Gil y la pintora Manuela Ballester. Resalta la intención ejemplarizante de sus artículos histórico-literarios y la transmisión de una memoria colectiva a través de ellos; una memoria heroica pese a las derrotas de la Guerra de España y el desfavorable contexto internacional.

We analyze the content of Mujeres Españolas as part of the culture and memory of the Spanish Marxist left in exile. It was a women’s magazine, anti-francoist and pacifist. A publication of the women’s exile, which aimed to attract the largest number of Spanish refugees who were against dictatorship and in favor of democracy in Mexico. Being totally focused on Spanish themes and exalting the values of the homeland embodied by the supporters of the Republic during the war, it can be considered nationalist. From a gender perspective, it has a maternalist discourse that exalts the traditional values of domesticity. From this point of view, we highlight the work of three of its closest collaborators: Luisa Carnés (director of the magazine), the writer Felisa Gil and the painter Manuela Ballester, highlighting the exemplary intention of their historical-literary articles and the transmission of a collective memory through them. A heroic memory despite the defeats of the Spanish Civil War and the unfavorable international context.
