| This article makes a comparison between the sentimental stories of two of the secondary couples in Tirant lo Blanch: the one composed by Diafebus and Estefania and the one formed by Hipòlit and the Emperadriu. The comparison allows to deduce remarkable concomitances between both relationships, which, in turn, if considered on the whole, contrast with the love story, vital to the novel, between Tirant and Carmesina. Moreover, all three coincide in the fact that they outline sentimental relationships among Breton knights of the lineage of Roca Salada and ladies of the Greek imperial family. This coincidence is revealed to be functionally fundamental if we take into account that one of the ideological goals Joanot Martorell persues in Tirant is the achievement of the old mediaeval utopia of consolidating a long-lasting union among the Christendom of Orient and that of Occident under a sole aegis, against non Christian opponents. To accomplish this objective, it seems there is a common denominator shared by both the sentimental stories here collated and the one starred by the main characters of the novel. Hence, the text is either strengthened by those former love chronicles (Diafebus-Estefania) or given an alternative through them (Hipòlit-Emperadriu). |
