Blanca Sol o el olvido de la «misión augusta y sublime de esposa y de madre»

Abstract

La maternidad es uno de los temas más importantes en el siglo XIX, pues es la base de la familia en tanto que es el medio por el que se le otorga a la patria nuevos ciudadanos. Por ello, el presente artículo aborda el tema de la maternidad en la novela Blanca Sol (1889) de Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera. Nos proponemos demostrar que en esta obra se cristalizan las prácticas sociales de la élite que impiden concretar el discurso hegemónico sobre la maternidad republicana. Por un lado, desde el discurso oficial, se promueve una relación entre madre e hijo para garantizar su educación en pro de la nación; pero la capital limeña, en su proceso de modernización y camaleonización de París y las urbes europeas, ofrece diversos eventos y circunstancias que exigen a «las damas de mundo» descuidar o anular sus deberes maternales.

Motherhood is one of the most important topics in the nineteenth century, because it is the basis of the family as it is the means by which new citizens are granted to the nation. Therefore, this article addresses the issue of motherhood in the novel Blanca Sol (1889) by Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera. I propose that in this novel the social practices of the elite are concretized in such a way that the hegemonic discourse on republican motherhood is inapplicable. On one hand, from the position of the official discourse, a relationship between the mother and the child is promoted to guarantee their education in favor of the nation. However, Lima’s process of modernization and mimesis with Paris and other European cities, end up offering various events and circumstances that require the «ladies of the world» to neglect or deny their maternal duties.
